Malta backs fair EU fishing policies to protect industry and environment

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Prime Minister Robert Abela has reiterated Malta’s support for a common European Union approach to fisheries management that is grounded in fairness, scientific research, and solidarity. He made these remarks during a meeting with the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis.

Abela emphasized that such policies are essential not only for environmental protection but also for ensuring food security and safeguarding marine biodiversity, especially in light of the growing challenges posed by climate change.
The Prime Minister highlighted that Malta’s fishing industry is largely composed of family-run businesses, which are particularly vulnerable to unfair competition and unsustainable practices. He stressed that Maltese fishermen must not be placed at a disadvantage within the European framework.
“Effective enforcement against overfishing, which has a direct negative impact on our fishermen, remains a top priority,” Abela said. He underlined that sustainable fishing practices are vital not just for the environment but for the long-term viability of the fishing sector itself.
