Med-Or, an Italy-France Seminar on Security in the Mediterranean

ROME (ITALPRESS) – On June 12, the Med-Or Italian Foundation, in collaboration with the French Embassy in Rome and the Italian Embassy in France, hosted for the first time a high-level Franco-Italian seminar dedicated to security issues in the Mediterranean, crucial topics for both countries.

This dialogue is part of the implementation of the Quirinal Treaty, signed in November 2021 between France and Italy. The Treaty calls for strengthened bilateral cooperation in the field of security and identifies the Mediterranean as a “shared space of intense interaction, transformation, and challenges” for both France and Italy. It also stipulates that France and Italy should “develop synergies and strengthen their coordination in the Mediterranean, promote a shared European approach to neighborhood policies to the South and East of the European Union, undertake joint initiatives, and contribute to strengthening relations between the European Union and Africa.”

In the presence of the French Ambassador to Italy, Martin Briens, and the Italian Ambassador to France, Emanuela D’Alessandro, representatives from public institutions, think tanks, and the private sector from both France and Italy came together for an in-depth discussion, in line with the strategic priority that both countries place on the broader Mediterranean region. The discussions addressed topics of common interest: strengthening a shared approach, access to energy resources and strategic supply chains, coordination in response to migration challenges, and cooperation in the field of defense. Participants also discussed the current situations in Libya, Lebanon, Gaza, and Syria. The day’s work concluded with remarks by the Italian Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto.

In order to continue this ongoing framework for dialogue, participants agreed on the opportunity to renew this Mediterranean security meeting on an annual basis, alternating between Paris and Rome. Among the future prospects to be developed is the potential creation of a permanent research structure on Mediterranean security, with the aim of bringing together all relevant stakeholders—institutions, businesses, associations, research institutes, foundations—interested in promoting even closer strategic alignment and achieving a common Franco-Italian vision regarding security challenges in the Mediterranean region.
