Malta, Interior Minister “New Immigration Policy Underway”

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta’s new labour force migration policy will begin to be implemented “in the coming days,” Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri announced in Parliament, marking the next stage in the government’s plan to better regulate foreign employment and reduce abuse in the labour market.

Speaking during parliamentary question time, Camilleri said the policy would be rolled out gradually to avoid “shocking the system,” following months of consultations with key stakeholders including employers, unions, and civil society groups. Originally unveiled in January, the policy introduces 32 measures designed to ensure fairer treatment of non-EU workers, improve workforce integration, and reduce overdependence on foreign labour.

A key component obliges employers to prioritise the recruitment of Maltese and EU nationals while also placing greater responsibility on businesses to retain and treat their non-EU workers fairly. The policy is built on four pillars: retaining existing workers, protecting workers’ rights and conditions, aligning migration with workforce needs, and shifting towards a skills-based approach, Camilleri said.
