Guardiola warns: “Reduce the squad or I’m leaving”

MANCHESTER (ENGLAND) (ITALPRESS) – Pep Guardiola slams oversized squads. The Manchester City manager has publicly called on his club to reduce their squad size, threatening to step down if the club doesn’t comply with his request in the summer.

“I don’t want to leave five or six players in the freezer. If they build a shorter squad, I’ll stay. If not, I’ll leave,” the Spanish manager said after the 3-1 win over Bournemouth.

On Tuesday, Guardiola left Abdukodir Khusanov, Savinho, James McAtee, Claudio Echeverri and Rico Lewis in the stands. “It’s difficult for me to tell my players to go to the stands and not play. For three or four months we had difficulty fielding eleven players because we had no defenders and it was a very difficult period. But now we have the injured players back and we can’t continue like this next season,” added the 54-year-old, who last November renewed his contract until June 2027.
