LA VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – In 2023, a record 6,716 young people left Malta to settle abroad, averaging nearly 19 departures per day, according to figures presented in Parliament by Finance Minister Clyde Caruana. The data, spanning the years 2019 to 2023, highlights 2023 as having the highest youth emigration numbers in half a decade.
While the number of incoming young residents to Malta was significantly higher—17,645 in total—the steady rise in Maltese youth choosing to emigrate has sparked growing concern about the country’s ability to retain its younger generations.
Recent surveys help shed light on the motivations behind this growing youth exodus. An EY Malta poll found that 75% of young Maltese respondents expressed a desire to live abroad. Common reasons cited included limited opportunities for work and education, escalating housing costs, and environmental degradation.
