ROME (ITALPRESS) – “We are about to play one of the greatest matches. If football has a purpose, it is to promote integration, and there is no better example than Spain and France.” Lamine Yamal made the remarks ahead of tonight’s World Cup semifinal, responding to comments by former Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who wrote in an editorial that the French national team “doesn’t have a single French player in its squad.” The statement prompted current Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to publicly distance himself from the remarks.
“There are far more complicated things in life than a football match. After the game, everyone will go on with their lives,” said the 19-year-old, who had already added spice to the fixture in recent days by saying he was not afraid of France.
“They asked me if I was scared, and I said no. But this is an extremely important match, and we’re very excited,” he added.
