RABAT (MOROCCO) (ITALPRESS) – The Republic of Panama, a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, has declared its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative regarding the Western Sahara dispute, describing it as “the most serious, credible, and realistic basis” for resolving the regional conflict”.
This position was formalized in a joint statement issued Monday in Rabat, following a meeting between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Panamanian counterpart, Javier Martínez-Acha Vásquez, who was on an official working visit to the Kingdom on June 16.
During a press conference after the meeting, the Panamanian Foreign Minister emphasized that Morocco’s autonomy initiative “should be the only solution for the future,” underscoring his country’s clear support for the plan as a pathway toward a lasting resolution of the dispute.
Panama’s backing of Morocco’s proposal comes after the Central American nation’s decision in November 2024 to sever all ties with the so-called “Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic” (SADR).
With Panama’s endorsement, a total of 125 UN member states now support Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a solution to the Sahara conflict, including 23 member states of the European Union.
