RABAT (MOROCCO) (ITALPRESS) – Guatemala considers the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco in 2007 “the only serious, credible, and realistic basis for reaching a definitive agreement” on the issue of Western Sahara.
This was stated today by Guatemalan Foreign Minister Carlos Ramiro Martinez Alvarado, following a meeting in Rabat with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.
“The Moroccan initiative represents the only foundation for a lasting, pragmatic, and mutually acceptable political solution, in full respect of the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of the Kingdom,” said Martinez Alvarado during a press briefing.
The head of Guatemalan diplomacy also reiterated his country’s “full and total” support for Morocco’s efforts to end what he described as an “artificial conflict.”
During the meeting, the two countries reaffirmed their shared commitment to defending the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Guatemala was the first Latin American country to open a General Consulate in Dakhla, in the territory of the Sahara, in December 2022.
