Western Sahara: Bourita to De Mistura – “Autonomy is the sole solution”

NEW YORK (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Morocco, Nasser Bourita, held a working meeting yesterday in New York with the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for the Sahara, Staffan De Mistura.

The meeting formed part of the consultations initiated by Mr. De Mistura in preparation for the forthcoming deliberations of the United Nations Security Council scheduled for October. During the exchange, Minister Bourita reaffirmed Morocco’s steadfast position, grounded exclusively in the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative, within the framework of the Kingdom’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

On this occasion, Morocco also reiterated its support for the efforts of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and his Personal Envoy. The discussions further addressed the most recent international developments reinforcing recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and of the Autonomy Initiative, considered the sole basis for reaching a lasting political settlement to the regional dispute. This approach currently enjoys the backing of more than 123 UN Member States, including 24 Member States of the European Union.
