RABAT (MOROCCO) (ITALPRESS) – The United States has sent a clear message to UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for the Sahara, Staffan De Mistura, reaffirming Washington’s firm stance in favour of a political solution based solely on autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty. The Moroccan outlet Le360 reports that, according to diplomatic sources in Washington, the message was delivered directly to De Mistura by Massad Boulos, senior adviser to US President Donald Trump on the Middle East and Africa, during a meeting in the US capital.
The contents of the discussion were made public by Boulos himself in a post on his X account. The meeting took place in the context of ongoing consultations ahead of the UN Security Council’s upcoming session on the Sahara issue, scheduled for October.
Several international outlets have already suggested that a comprehensive review of the UN mission’s mandate in the Sahara may be underway. The new approach would aim to focus the UN’s work exclusively on facilitating negotiations around the autonomy framework, with plans to rename MINURSO as MINSASO (United Nations Mission for Negotiating an Autonomy Statute for Western Sahara).
This shift would reflect the fact that the option of a self-determination referendum was definitively abandoned by the UN back in 2000, due to political and technical infeasibility.
It is worth recalling that last July, on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of Morocco’s Throne Day, the US president reiterated America’s unwavering support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara in a congratulatory message to King Mohammed VI. This renewed commitment comes at a time when the international community is increasingly aligning with the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative as the sole realistic and lasting framework for resolving the regional dispute.
To date, 123 UN member states recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara or back the Autonomy Initiative, including three permanent members of the Security Council (the United States, France, and the United Kingdom) and 24 EU member states. In addition, around 30 African, Arab, and Latin American countries have opened consulates in Laâyoune, Dakhla, and Smara, in a clear and concrete acknowledgment of Moroccan sovereignty.
