RABAT (MOROCCO) (ITALPRESS) – The United States has presented a draft resolution on Western Sahara to members of the UN Security Council, marking a significant diplomatic shift after more than half a century of dispute.

The text, prepared by Washington in its capacity as the Security Council’s lead on the Western Sahara file, formally acknowledges Morocco’s 2007 autonomy plan as a “serious, credible, and realistic basis” and “the most credible foundation for a just and lasting resolution of the dispute.”

The draft extends the mandate of MINURSO for only three months, until January 31, 2026, and calls on all parties—Morocco, Algeria, the Polisario Front, and Mauritania—to resume unconditional direct negotiations based exclusively on Morocco’s autonomy proposal, with the goal of reaching an agreement before the mandate expires.

The document recognises the broad international support for Morocco’s initiative and commends the commitment of several world leaders. It also requests that the UN Secretary-General present recommendations on the future of MINURSO, including its possible transformation or closure, depending on the outcome of the negotiations.
The resolution expresses gratitude to the United States for its readiness to host the talks under the auspices of the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, reaffirming Washington’s leading role in the process.

According to diplomatic observers in New York, the text which asserts that “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the most realistic solution”, represents a decisive step toward the final resolution of the regional dispute and consolidates international support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.
