“The Malvinas are Argentinian”, the British government calls for an investigation by FIFA

LONDON (ENGLAND) (ITALPRESS) – London is defying the trend and is calling on FIFA to intervene. Yesterday, after their semifinal victory over England, the Albiceleste players carried a banner onto the pitch reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” which British Business Minister Peter Kyle called a “blatant violation” of FIFA rules, which prohibit political symbols on the pitch.

“Politics must be separated from football. Indeed, it is one of the fundamental principles of the World Cup,” he told the BBC. “Now the matter is up to FIFA, and we expect them to launch an investigation into this incident.” This request is supported by the London government: “The World Cup may not belong to us, but the Falkland Islands certainly do,” Downing Street stated. Back in 2014, the Argentine Football Federation was fined 30,000 Swiss francs after its players posed for photos with a banner bearing the same slogan before facing Slovenia.
