Rabat (Morocco) (ITALPRESS) – The establishment of a future U.S. consulate in Dakhla has taken a new step forward. An American consular delegation is currently visiting the Moroccan Saharan city to meet with local authorities and begin preliminary procedures for the inauguration of the diplomatic mission, according to Africa Intelligence.
The visit confirms recent statements made by Massad Boulos, special adviser to former U.S. President Donald Trump for Africa, who said that Washington “is preparing to open a consulate in Dakhla.” The decision follows Trump’s December 10, 2020 announcement recognising Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara.
The initiative is also tied to Washington’s commitment to encourage U.S. businesses to establish a stronger presence in the region — a position reiterated by Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau in New York after a meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly
.
Meanwhile, the UN Security Council is expected to vote on October 30 on a resolution, for which the United States serves as penholder, recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and endorsing the autonomy plan as the basis for a lasting solution.
