Sahara, Netherlands support autonomy under moroccan sovereignty

RABAT (MOROCCO) (ITALPRESS) – “The Netherlands considers genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty to be the most viable solution” to the Sahara dispute, Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen stated this, as reported by the MAP news agency, during a press conference held yesterday in Rabat following his meeting with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita.

This position was also reiterated in the joint communiqué released following talks between Bourita and Berendsen, who are on a working visit to Morocco. Berendsen also reaffirmed the Netherlands’ support for UN Security Council Resolution 2797, as well as for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, to “facilitate and advance negotiations based on the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco, with a view to reaching a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution.”

The Foreign Minister finally emphasized that “the Netherlands will act in accordance with this position, including diplomatically and economically, in compliance with international law.”
