RABAT (MOROCCO) (ITALPRESS) – Austria today expressed its support for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), stating that “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could constitute one of the most viable solutions” to the regional dispute over the Sahara. This is according to a statement issued by the Moroccan Foreign Ministry, specifying that the position was enshrined in a joint communiqué adopted at the end of the meeting in Vienna between the Austrian Minister for European and International Affairs, Beate Meinl-Reisinger, and her counterpart Nasser Bourita, on a working visit to Austria.
In the joint statement, according to the Moroccan note, Austria also welcomed the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2797, which fully supports the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to “facilitate and conduct negotiations on the basis of the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco, with a view to achieving a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution.” In this context, Austria expressed satisfaction with “Morocco’s willingness to clarify how autonomy within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty could be implemented,” the joint statement reads.
