VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Public interest in politics in Malta has fallen to its lowest level since the State of the Nation survey began in 2021, according to the 2025 edition released today.
The annual report found that 33.5% of Maltese citizens are not interested in politics at all. This marks a significant rise in political apathy, especially among young people. Only 30.8% of respondents said politics is very important to them, continuing a downward trend. Among those under 25, that number dropped to just 19.8%.
The survey, conducted in May with 1,064 participants aged 16 and over, explored values, beliefs, and attitudes among the Maltese and Gozitan population. Just 27% of people said they form opinions based on their political party’s views, while 41.6% explicitly said they do not. Still, 79.2% support a party because it reflects their views.
Despite weakening engagement, 74.8% still plan to vote in the next general election, and most reject the idea that Malta’s two main parties are indistinguishable. Interestingly, while political interest declines, personal optimism is on the rise. A record 72.1% say they are happy, and 73.9% feel successful—both all-time highs in the survey’s history.
