HELSINKI (FINLAND) (ITALPRESS) – “After speaking with several players and members of the staff, I had time to reflect. I came to the conclusion that a change of captain was necessary. Making this kind of decision is very difficult. Lewandowski is an outstanding player – no one can take that away from him. But I felt a change was needed”. This is how the Poland coach, Michal Probierz, responded to Robert Lewandowski who yesterday announced that he would refuse calls from the national team as long as the current coach remains in charge.
“I spoke with Robert on the phone. After arriving in Helsinki, I met with Piotr Zieliński and discussed the captaincy with him. I called Robert at 21:16 Finnish time. We talked briefly. I told him I felt we needed to change something, and that Piotr Zieliński would be a better captain at this time. Robert responded by saying the captain’s armband doesn’t mean anything and that it wouldn’t change anything within the team. That might be true from his perspective. From mine, it changes a lot”, he concluded.
