PM Abela “Opposition should stop Eu debate on Malta”

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Prime Minister and Labour Party Leader Robert Abela has called on Opposition Leader Alex Borg to urge Nationalist MEPs to withdraw their requested debate on Malta in the European Parliament. Speaking at a political event, Abela said the debate aimed to damage Malta’s reputation and discourage foreign investment. He noted that while the Opposition had remained silent, the Labour Party had tabled a motion in the Maltese Parliament promoting a debate in support of Malta.

This motion, he said, showcased recent governance reforms, including the first-ever appointment of the Chief Justice by a two-thirds parliamentary majority. In a swift response, the Nationalist Party accused the Prime Minister of “repeating a lie.” It denied that its MEPs had pushed for a debate against Malta, insisting that the session was scheduled with the backing of the European Socialists, whose Vice-President is Labour’s Deputy Leader Alex Agius Saliba. The Opposition maintained that the government was attempting to deflect attention from its own failings by attacking critics at home and abroad.
