Nearly half of Maltese back current taxes, EU survey finds

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Nearly half of Maltese citizens would keep taxes and public services at current levels, making Malta one of the EU’s strongest supporters of the status quo, according to a European Commission survey.

The Flash Eurobarometer on taxation, conducted across all 27 member states, found that 46% of Maltese prefer maintaining present tax rates and spending. This figure is far above the EU average of 26% and close to Luxembourg’s 47%, the highest recorded. Denmark followed at 43%.

Only 31% of Maltese believe taxes should be cut even if it means reducing public services, below the EU average of 39%. Meanwhile, just 19% favour higher taxes to fund more services, compared to 27% EU-wide.
