VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – A fishing vessel rescued 53 migrants in international waters east of Malta on Sunday after their boat ran into distress, Maltese authorities said.
At least 11 people died after falling into the sea while attempting to reach the assisting fishing boat.
Their bodies were later recovered by an Italian coastguard patrol dispatched to the area.
The incident occurred about 50 nautical miles east of Malta, within the country’s search and rescue responsibility zone, the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) said.
