Maltese PM aims to bring back SiGMA’s flagship conference

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Prime Minister Robert Abela has pledged to bring SiGMA’s largest gaming conference back to Malta, after the events group shifted its flagship European edition to Italy this year.

SiGMA, which held a smaller-scale event in Malta this week, has left the door open to returning with its main conference if the island’s infrastructure improves. CEO Emily Micallef said such a move was possible.

Abela said his government’s goal is to grow the March edition of SiGMA in Malta until it regains its flagship status. “My ambition is for the upcoming event in March to continue growing until it once again becomes one of SiGMA’s largest events,” he said.

This year’s Malta edition was expected to draw 12,000 delegates, less than half the 27,000 who attended the group’s main event last year. Both events were staged at the Malta Maritime Hub.

Abela also confirmed that talks are under way to build a new national convention centre on the site of the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre. He promised a venue “large enough to cater for bigger events” and located to avoid traffic bottlenecks.

While no timeline was given, Abela said the government will push the project forward “in the most efficient way possible without any bureaucracy.”
