VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Pressure is mounting on the European Commission after Labour MEP Thomas Bajada demanded urgent action against illegal lampuki fishing by Tunisian and Italian fishers during the closed season.
In a letter to EU Fisheries Commissioner Costas Kadis, Bajada cited social media footage posted as early as 25 July 2025 showing Common Dolphinfish (lampuki) being caught and possibly sold by Tunisian and Italian vessels. This breaches General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) rules, which only allow fishing from 15 August to 31 December.
