Malta tops EU respiratory death rates in 2023

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta recorded the highest death rate from respiratory diseases in the EU in 2023, according to new data published by Eurostat.

A total of 545 people died from respiratory conditions, excluding COVID-19, translating to a standardised rate of 121.8 deaths per 100,000 people—well above the EU average of 75.2.

Denmark and Romania followed, with rates of 114.3 and 108.9 respectively.

The figure marks the highest level recorded in Malta since comparable data began in 2011, and the first time the country has ranked highest in the EU for respiratory-related deaths.
