VALLETTA (MALTA)(ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta is among the countries set to receive financial assistance from the European Union following the devastating storms that struck parts of Europe earlier this year.
The European Commission has approved advance payments totalling €103.6 million under the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF) to support reconstruction efforts in Malta, Portugal and Spain.
The funding follows applications submitted by the three countries and a positive technical assessment by the Commission confirming they met the criteria for assistance.
Malta will receive an advance payment of €931,014 after Storm Harry battered the islands between 19 and 21 January 2026.
The storm caused widespread flooding, coastal damage and transport disruption, with significant impacts on public infrastructure, harbours, fisheries, aquaculture, agricultural assets and local communities.
Portugal will receive €65.37 million, while Spain has been allocated €37.26 million to help ease the financial burden of recovery following storms that hit the two countries in January and February 2026.
Since its establishment in 2002, the EU Solidarity Fund has provided more than €11 billion in assistance for 148 disaster events, including 128 natural disasters and 20 health emergencies.
