VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Asylum applications, irregular sea arrivals, and pending migration cases in Malta all declined significantly in 2024, according to new data published by the National Statistics Office (NSO).
The NSO reported that the International Protection Agency received 701 initial and repeat asylum requests last year, excluding temporary protection claims. This marks a 17.9% decrease compared to 2023.
Irregular sea arrivals also dropped. Only six boats carrying 238 people reached Malta in 2024, a 37.4% decline from the previous year. Most of these migrants—over 80%—were from Asian countries, while the rest came from Africa. December was the busiest month, with 83 arrivals.
Of the asylum applicants, 229 were granted protection and 298 were rejected. Pending cases fell by nearly 25%, with 1,497 applications still awaiting a decision by year’s end.
The NSO noted that most people living in Malta under temporary protection were Ukrainians, numbering 2,221 by December.
Around 193 asylum seekers were accommodated in open centres, with many being Sudanese and Somali nationals. Migration outflows continued, with 60 people relocated to
other EU countries, 54 resettled outside the EU, and 35 returning home voluntarily in 2024.
