Malta, poverty risk falls, but one in five still affected

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Around one in five people in Malta remain at risk of poverty or social exclusion, according to figures presented in parliament.

Data tabled by Minister Michael Falzon shows that 19.7% of the population is currently at risk, down from 24.6% in 2013.

The figures mark a notable improvement over the past decade, with the proportion falling from roughly one in four individuals to one in five.

Other key indicators also point to progress. Severe material and social deprivation dropped sharply from 10.2% to 4%, while overall deprivation declined from 19.9% to 9%.

The number of people relying on social assistance has also decreased significantly, falling from more than 12,700 in 2013 to 5,676 by the end of 2025.
Recipients of unemployment assistance recorded an even steeper decline over the same period.

Despite these positive trends, the data underscores that a considerable segment of the population continues to face economic hardship.
The figures highlight ongoing challenges for policymakers as they seek to further reduce poverty and social exclusion in Malta.
