Malta, PM urges caution on Euthanasia Bill

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Prime Minister Robert Abela has signalled a cautious and methodical approach to Malta’s proposed euthanasia legislation, stressing that the government is reviewing some 15,000 public submissions and will not rush into tabling a bill.

Speaking to journalists, Abela said the extensive public response demands careful consideration. “It will take time – not weeks, but months,” he stated, suggesting the final legislation may differ significantly from the original proposal.

“The worst thing one can do in such delicate matters, which impact individuals at their most vulnerable, is to rush,” Abela said, hinting at the possibility of further public consultation before any draft bill reaches Parliament.

While refusing to commit to a timeline, the Prime Minister said the government remains committed to crafting legislation that is “acceptable to the majority” and reflects the country’s values.
