VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta’s Ambassador Franklin Aquilina met Libya’s Interior Minister Emad Al-Trabelsi in Tripoli to discuss strengthening bilateral security cooperation, officials said.
The talks, held at the Ministry of Interior headquarters, focused on joint efforts in training, capacity building and border security, as both countries seek closer coordination on regional stability in the Mediterranean. Aquilina was accompanied by Malta’s Special Envoy for Migration Alexander Dalli and Deputy Head of Mission Shaun Chircop Troisi.
According to a ministry statement, the meeting addressed mechanisms for improving security coordination and exchanging expertise between the two sides, with the aim of raising the efficiency and readiness of security agencies.
Illegal migration featured prominently in the discussions, with both delegations describing it as a shared challenge requiring sustained cooperation. The sides also reviewed efforts to combat migrant smuggling networks and human trafficking, and stressed the need to intensify collaboration in securing borders.
Al-Trabelsi reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to expanding partnership with Malta, particularly in technical and training fields, to help build a professional and effective security institution. Both countries expressed a shared commitment to enhancing security and stability across the Mediterranean region.
