VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – The Maltese government has launched a revamped Road Code aimed at improving safety and awareness on the nation’s roads, as the country grapples with the aftermath of three fatal accidents that occurred within less than 24 hours.
Unveiled by Minister for Transport Chris Bonett, the new Maltese Road Code is a comprehensive update reflecting the changing realities of mobility in Malta. It includes clearer guidance for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and users of modern transport like electric scooters and pedelecs.
The code places strong emphasis on discipline and the dangers of distractions, particularly mobile phone use while driving. “It is not uncommon for someone to end up killed or bedridden because a driver failed to think twice,” Bonett said during the launch.
As part of the initiative, the government introduced the “Think Twice” campaign, which aims to raise awareness about everyday decisions that can have life-altering consequences on the road. An additional campaign targeting children will complement this effort, promoting long-term cultural change in road use behavior.
Transport Malta CEO Kurt Farrugia said the updated guidelines are necessary to address new challenges and ensure respect among all road users. The code also includes specific safety rules for wearing helmets and seat belts, accident reporting, and navigating traffic signs.
The announcement coincided with a grim weekend on Malta’s roads, with three separate accidents claiming three lives and leaving several others seriously injured. While investigations are ongoing, the incidents have added urgency to the government’s push for safer roads.
Minister Bonett concluded by stating that regardless of how transport evolves, “the value of life and the sense of safety must remain unchanged.”
