Malta, government eyes tougher road laws amid spike in fatal crashes

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – In response to a sharp rise in fatal road accidents, Malta’s Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela has revealed that three ministries are jointly evaluating stricter enforcement measures.

The Ministries of Health, Justice, and Home Affairs are working together to improve roadside checks, with a focus on catching drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol. While no implementation date has been set, discussions are ongoing, even during Parliament’s summer break.

Abela stated that the measures will be announced “when the time is right,” stressing that policy changes of this kind require careful consideration and cannot be rushed.
The urgency follows a tragic week at the end of July, during which six people died in separate traffic incidents. So far in 2025, 17 people have been killed on Maltese roads, including four motorcyclists.
