VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Prime Minister Robert Abela and Opposition Leader Alex Borg have agreed that both sides of Parliament must work together to address Malta’s worsening traffic problem through the creation of a new mass transport system.
The consensus was reached during a meeting held at the Nationalist Party headquarters — their second encounter following last month’s talks at the Labour Party headquarters. Borg opened the meeting by urging the need for unity on national issues that go beyond party politics. He called on the prime minister to cooperate with the Opposition to design an effective transport plan to ease congestion across the islands.
Abela echoed the call for collaboration, saying agreement must first be reached on whether Malta needs a mass transport system and, if so, what form it should take. He described the project as potentially Malta’s largest-ever infrastructure investment and invited the Opposition to be part of its development. Abela had previously spoken of a possible metro system, with updated plans for mass transport expected by the end of the year. Earlier proposals for a €6.2 billion underground metro with 25 stations were unveiled before the last general election but later shelved and omitted from national budgets.
