VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta’s ruling forces were defeated last night in a parliamentary vote on the nomination of Judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera as head of the Judiciary and the Supreme Court. The opposition voted against the nomination, plunging Malta into an institutional impasse over the leadership of the judicial institutions. The failed vote came despite a call from President Myriam Spiteri Debono, who urged both parties to reach an agreement in the spirit of the 2020 constitutional reforms.
The clash highlighted growing tensions between the parties, which only a few months ago had promised a new phase of cooperation on constitutional issues. Civil society organizations, including the Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation and Repubblika, have warned that the stalemate risks undermining the independence of the judiciary and public trust. The Bar Association also warned against the growing politicization of the justice system, stressing that public confrontation over candidates could undermine the authority of whoever is ultimately appointed.
