VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Four jurors who served on the Maltese businessman Yorgen Fenech trial have been arrested by police as part of an investigation linked to the proceedings.
The jurors were arrested on Thursday morning and questioned by officers from the Financial Crimes Investigation Department (FCID), which is leading the post-trial investigation.
The reasons for their arrest have not been made public. The investigation is connected to matters involving the jury.
Fenech was acquitted earlier this month of complicity in the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia and of conspiring to kill her.
The nine-member jury returned an eight-to-one not-guilty verdict on both counts following a 55-day trial.
The prosecution is expected to appeal the acquittal, with the Attorney General’s Office required to file an appeal within 15 working days of the verdict. Any appeal would be considered by three judges and could potentially lead to a retrial.
Caruana Galizia was killed in a car bomb attack in October 2017. The person alleged to have masterminded the murder remains at large.
