VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta’s position as a key migratory route in the Mediterranean is back in the spotlight after BirdLife International’s State of the World’s Birds report raised the alarm regarding a 45% decline in the affected species. According to the report, one in nine migratory species is threatened with extinction. Key factors driving this decline include habitat loss, climate change, hunting, and other pressures linked to human activity.
The report was presented at the Global Flyways Summit in Nairobi, where governments and environmental organizations called for greater international cooperation to protect birds along migratory routes that span multiple countries. BirdLife Malta CEO Mark Sultana highlighted Malta’s particular responsibility, given its location “in the heart of the Mediterranean” and along a major migratory route.
