LA VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – The Maltese Embassy in Tripoli has strongly denied reports that Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh has fled to Malta following escalating political unrest and violent protests in the Libyan capital. The embassy described the report as “misleading information”, stressing that no Libyan official has entered Malta through diplomatic channels in recent weeks.
“The Maltese Embassy in Tripoli confirms, after consulting the relevant Maltese authorities, that no Libyan official has reached Malta with diplomatic permissions in the recent period. It is shameful to spread such disinformation and to seek to undermine the good relations that have always united the Maltese and Libyan peoples”, the statement read.
In the face of worsening security, Malta evacuated 38 Maltese citizens from Tripoli on Thursday, in an operation conducted in coordination with Libyan security forces.
Maltese Foreign Minister Ian Borg commented on the situation, saying that Malta is “following with concern the developments in Libya. Malta calls for calm and dialogue in the interest of the Libyan people. While the majority of Maltese citizens were evacuated last night, we stand ready to assist anyone in need and remain in close contact with our partners.”
