VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – The new Greek bank replacing HSBC in Malta will begin operations in March of next year, Finance Minister Clyde Caruana announced on national television.
Minister Caruana confirmed that CrediaBank is set to launch its services once the regulatory process is finalized. Approval from the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) and the European Central Bank is expected by the first quarter of 2026.
“It looks like this process could conclude by February or March of next year. Does this mean CrediaBank will be in Malta? Yes,” Caruana said.
The Minister described the takeover negotiations as a “complex process,” most of which were conducted in London. He emphasized that the government’s priority throughout the process was to ensure stability in Malta’s banking sector.
Caruana underlined that the number of banks in Malta should not decrease, pointing out that the country’s three largest banks currently hold 90% of the market. “It is important for the financial sector, and for the economy at large, that competition is preserved and that Maltese consumers continue to have access to strong and reputable banking services,” he explained.
