VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta is competing with Ibiza and Sardinia for a direct flight to the United States. Delta Air Lines has launched a public consultation among its passengers to choose its next Mediterranean destination for summer 2026.
From August 25 to 29, members of Delta’s SkyMiles loyalty program will be able to cast their vote via the airline’s app, in a “Route Race” that could see Malta join the airline’s global network of 275 destinations. Delta, which operates over 4,000 daily flights, describes Malta as a place that combines “centuries of history with the sun-drenched charm of the Mediterranean” and “perfect for customers who want their journey to feel like a story.”
A direct transatlantic flight has long been a goal for Malta, but trade obstacles have held it back. Alan Borg, CEO of Malta International Airport, emphasized that long-haul routes cost three to four times more to operate, and the size of the Maltese market limits its economic sustainability.
In 2023, approximately 55,000 American tourists visited Malta, signaling growing demand. A direct connection to New York would eliminate long connections and strengthen Malta’s attractiveness for both tourists and business travelers.
