Libya, sources “al-Zoubi is reshaping the military landscape in Tripoli”

TRIPOLI (LIBYA) (ITALPRESS) – A Libyan military source has revealed to Italpress details of a roadmap aimed at reshaping the military landscape in the western part of the country, in an effort to prevent further escalations, particularly in light of repeated mysterious drone attacks.

The source, who requested anonymity, explained that “Deputy Defence Minister of the Government of National Unity Abdel Salam al-Zoubi has adopted a roadmap based on several elements, foremost among them the reorganization of armed formations and the removal of their members from cities and residential areas.”

The source also specified that “another key issue being addressed concerns identifying the areas where ammunition and military equipment are stored, with a view to relocating them to areas far from urban centres in order to prevent possible accidents or loss of control.”

According to the source, al-Zoubi’s plan enjoys broad local support as well as a balance of international backing. This reportedly emerged clearly during his recent direct meetings with Egyptian, US and Turkish delegations, as part of a decisive political and military process aimed at reaching key understandings that would feed directly into the historic process of unifying the Libyan army.

Al-Zoubi was appointed Libya’s deputy defence minister several years ago. In recent days, he met in Sirte with Saddam Haftar, chief of staff of the Libyan National Army’s ground forces, on the sidelines of the Flintlock 2026 military exercises. An informed source said that al-Zoubi “is racing against time to impose a new reality on the ground and reshape the military structure in the western region.”

These strategic moves come at a crucial stage, marked by intense US diplomatic activity aimed at breaking the political deadlock and bringing about a substantial shift in the Libyan crisis. Available data confirm that any comprehensive political agreement supported and sponsored by the international community will remain dependent on the ability to establish strict control over the security and military apparatus and unify the armed forces under an organized structure.

Stability on the ground is therefore the fundamental pillar and the only real gateway to the success of any credible political initiative. Al-Zoubi has risen through the various ranks of a military career. In 2015, he founded the 301 Battalion, while in 2022 he was appointed to lead the 111 Brigade, before being named deputy defence minister based in Tripoli.
