ROME (ITALPRESS) – The West must “choose the right policy, support the Iranian people and their democratic resistance movement” to overthrow the current regime and establish a democratic republic in Iran”. This is the message from Hossein Abedini, Vice President of the UK Office of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), in an interview with Italpress.
“The situation in Iran is extremely unstable,” Abedini said. “There are four major concerns when it comes to Iran. First, the dire human rights situation, which is worsening—especially after the 12-day war between Iran and Israel. The regime is increasingly afraid of its opposition.”
Abedini pointed to a surge in executions under Masoud Pezeshkian, Iran’s newly elected president, whom he described as “so-called liberal.” “At least 1,450 people have already been executed,” he noted. “According to Amnesty International and other human rights organizations, the number of executions has at least doubled compared to last year.”
The second major issue, Abedini explained, is the regime’s escalating state-sponsored terrorism. “Inside Iran, both dissidents and foreign nationals are being targeted.” The third concern is Iran’s “alarming interference in the affairs of other Middle Eastern countries,” and the fourth is the issue of weapons of mass destruction, particularly Iran’s nuclear programme, which he described as a major concern for the international community.
Abedini traveled to Rome for two international conferences focused on Iran, held on July 30 at the Sala Regina in the Chamber of Deputies and on July 31 at the Palazzo dei Congressi. “Everyone knows this regime is on a slippery slope toward collapse. There’s no doubt it will fall,” Abedini said. “What matters now is identifying the right solution.”
Abedini himself has survived multiple assassination attempts by the Iranian regime. “I was shot in the chest and abdomen. I underwent several surgeries and was in a coma for nearly 50 days. Even while in the hospital, they tried twice to finish the job. But I survived—miraculously—and spoke about it in the international press,” he recounted.
Asked what makes him such a threat to the regime, Abedini responded, “They know the real enemy is within Iran—it’s the Iranian people. That’s why they are so afraid. That’s why they execute people inside the country and assassinate Iranian citizens abroad.”
Regarding the recent 12-day conflict involving Israeli and U.S. attacks on Iran’s nuclear and military sites, Abedini said these developments stem from “decades of flawed Western policy—what we call a policy of appeasement.”
“You can’t overthrow a dictatorship from above with bombs,” he said. “This regime must be confronted firmly by the international community. Western countries must stand with the Iranian people.”
Abedini highlighted the proposal of NCRI’s President-elect Maryam Rajavi, who advocates for a “third option” that rejects both appeasement and war. “Her vision supports the Iranian people and the democratic resistance in their struggle to free themselves from this brutal dictatorship.”
“We are not asking Western nations for money or weapons,” Abedini clarified. “We are simply asking them to take a strong, principled stand against this regime and end the policy of appeasement that has been in place for four decades.” H
e argued that such a policy has emboldened the regime, allowing it to pursue nuclear weapons more aggressively and expand its influence through proxy groups across the region, while also intensifying internal repression and executions.
Abedini noted that over the past 40 years, more than 120,000 members and supporters of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran—the main opposition movement—have been executed. “These are not just numbers,” he emphasized. “These are human beings who chose the path of resistance and paid the ultimate price.”
“The West must now choose the right course of action—support the Iranian people and their democratic resistance to bring down this regime and establish a democratic republic,” Abedini concluded. “Maryam Rajavi’s 10-point plan envisions a future Iran free of nuclear weapons, free of executions, with full gender equality, and peaceful coexistence with its neighbours.”
