ROME (ITALPRESS) – Lionel Messi sustained an upper right thigh injury in the 11th minute of Inter Miami’s match against Mexican club Necaxa, which took place on the Italian night in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Early in the second-round match of the Leagues Cup group stage, a competition between Major League Soccer teams and Mexican clubs, the 38-year-old Argentine star collided with opposing defender Alexis Pena.
Moments later, Messi sat on the ground before receiving treatment. Unable to continue the match, he was substituted in the 11th minute and headed to the locker room alone. “He felt some discomfort. But we won’t know until tomorrow (today, ed.) how serious his injury is,” Miami coach Javier Mascherano said after his team’s 5-4 victory on penalties (2-2 after regulation time). “There’s probably something wrong. Maybe not too serious, because he wasn’t really in pain. But he felt a bit of pain,” added Messi’s former Barcelona teammate.
