Giorgetti: “Tariffs hurt expectations, not just trade”

RIMINI (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Economy and Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti warned that the current climate of global uncertainty is weighing heavily on Italy’s economic outlook, citing both the impact of war and the rising tide of trade barriers.
“Unforeseen events have occurred: the war, with all its economic consequences, especially for a country like ours that lacks raw materials. But also the trade war, with tariffs, is a source of unpredictability that harms economic expectations even before it affects exports,” Giorgetti said at the Rimini Meeting.
The minister stressed that these elements “do not bring favourable winds” but must be faced with a sense of responsibility and long-term vision. “Both short- and long-term approaches require that this principle of responsibility, tied to sustainability over time, be measured carefully,” he noted.
Giorgetti described his government’s economic strategy as one based on building solid foundations rather than short-term fixes. “The approach of this government and of my ministry stems from an awareness of the kind of house we want and whether it should endure over the long term. In terms of sustainability, it must be built in the right way. But you cannot start from the roof-you need seriousness, responsibility, humility, and the patience to lay one brick after another, starting from the ground up,” he said.
“We have worked quietly, and now the results are beginning to show: the solid foundations for the house of the future,” Giorgetti concluded.
