LONDON (ENGLAND) (ITALPRESS) – After what happened in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 between Atletico and Real Madrid, with Julian Alvarez’s penalty considered invalid due to a double touch, the IFAB has decided to change the rule starting from 1 July 2025.
The International Board has decided to consider the intentionality: if the person taking the penalty hits the ball involuntarily with both feet at the same time, or if the ball touches the foot or the supporting leg immediately after the kick, the penalty will be retaken if the ball enters the goal, otherwise an indirect free kick will be awarded to the defender (unless the referee decides to let play continue for the advantage). If this scenario were to occur during a series of penalties, if the ball does not enter the goal there will be no retake and the penalty will be considered failed.
