VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Counterfeit jewellery, watches and handbags are costing Malta an estimated €8 million each year, according to the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).
The losses include €7 million in the jewellery and watches sector and €1 million in handbags.
Across the European Union, counterfeiting causes annual losses of about €12 billion in clothing and a further €2.7 billion in handbags, jewellery and watches.
EUIPO said design-driven industries employ around 28 million people, representing 13% of EU employment and generating more than 16% of the bloc’s GDP.
