Activists urge Malta to stop coal shipment to Israel

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – The Maltese authorities are facing mounting pressure to act against a Malta-flagged bulk carrier transporting Colombian coal to Israel, a shipment activists say breaches international law and Colombian export bans.

The vessel Fortune departed Colombia on 24 July and is due in Hadera, Israel, on 14 August, according to the Maltese group Gustizzja ghall-Palestina. The activists cite a Colombian decree that prohibits coal exports to Israel, declaring the resource a “dual-use item” linked to military activities.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza and ordered naval interceptions of coal shipments to Israel. The decree aims to pressure Israel by cutting off resources used in its military infrastructure.

The activists warn that the Fortune’s cargo will bolster Israel’s energy grid, which integrates occupied territories.
