RABAT (MOROCCO) (ITALPRESS) – King Mohammed VI of Morocco chaired a working meeting yesterday evening at the Royal Palace in Rabat, focusing on the phase following the conclusion of MINURSO’s activities. According to a statement issued by the Royal Cabinet and reported by the “Map” news agency, the United Nations Security Council did not renew the mission’s mandate at its meeting on 30 October 2026. During the meeting, the King reiterated the priorities outlined in the previous statement of 30 October: safeguarding the Kingdom’s territorial integrity, national security and the peace of mind of its citizens, particularly those living in the southern provinces.
Mohammed VI issued instructions to ensure that each authority, within its respective remit, takes the necessary steps to implement these priorities, continue development programmes and infrastructure projects in the territory, and monitor developments in the matter. The statement reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment to respecting the ceasefire, stressing that this position will remain unchanged following the end of the United Nations mission’s mandate. The Royal Cabinet also maintained that the circumstances under which the mission was established and the functions originally assigned to it have now been overtaken by events.
To oversee the closure and withdrawal operations, the King instructed the MINURSO Coordination Office, which falls under the Ministry of the Interior, to liaise with the United Nations and facilitate the orderly implementation of the procedures. Mohammed VI also reaffirmed the Kingdom’s respect for its international commitments and its diplomatic approach, based on maintaining peace and safeguarding national sovereignty. The statement further referred to the support expressed by friendly countries for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and for the autonomy proposal, presented by Rabat as a political solution to the conflict.
The meeting was attended by Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri, identified in the statement as Head of Government, Royal Adviser Fouad Ali El Himma, Minister of the Interior Abdelouafi Laftit, and General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the Royal Armed Forces and Commander of the Southern Zone.
