VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta has been elected co-facilitator in the drafting of a United Nations convention on the rights of older persons, Foreign Affairs Minister Chris Fearne has announced.
In a post on X, Fearne said Malta would work alongside Lesotho to lead discussions on the treaty’s implementation and review mechanisms.
He described the appointment as “deserved recognition of years of work” by Malta’s team in Geneva.
The announcement came as the UN Intergovernmental Working Group on the Human Rights of Older Persons concluded its second session, held in Geneva between October 26 and 30.
The proposed convention aims to establish a legally binding international framework to protect older persons from discrimination, abuse and neglect.
It would also seek to safeguard their rights to healthcare, social protection and independent living.
The initiative is intended to strengthen international protections for older people and ensure their rights are recognised and upheld.
