TUNIS (TUNISIA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Tunisian President Kais Saied has called for a review of the legislation governing public procurement, with the aim of combating corruption, curbing irregularities and speeding up the implementation of projects, particularly in the infrastructure sector.
The issue was discussed during a meeting held yesterday afternoon, 2 November, with the Minister of Equipment and Housing, who is also overseeing the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy, Salah Zouari.
During the meeting, Saied reviewed several infrastructure projects, including the road linking Tunisia and Algeria, which is nearing completion, as well as other major roads across the country. Some of these projects remain unfinished, while others have shown shortcomings and defects shortly after completion.
The projects discussed also included the construction of a bridge connecting the island of Djerba to the mainland, as an alternative to the current ferry service and the Roman road. According to the Tunisian Presidency, the project is expected to put an end to the daily difficulties faced by travellers.
The president stressed that the current public procurement regulations are no longer suited to the country’s needs, both in terms of project completion deadlines and the irregularities, fraud and corruption uncovered in certain procurement procedures.
Saied also reiterated the need to put an end to the isolation of several regions and improve mobility for citizens, highlighting regional disparities and the failure to make full use of the natural resources available in different parts of the country.
