Man Utd, memorial in Germany dedicated to Munich air disaster vandalized

MANCHESTER (ENGLAND) (ITALPRESS) – The memorial dedicated to the victims of the 1958 Manchester United air disaster in Munich was vandalized last Monday, according to British media reports. Several items of great sentimental value were stolen from the memorial site located at Manchesterplatz; the glass display case housing them was smashed with a stone, and the theft is believed to have occurred between 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Among the stolen items are several medals and a glass sculpture that had originally been gifted to the former Mayor of Munich, Dieter Reiter. The memorial commemorates the tragedy of February 6, 1958, when the plane carrying the Manchester United squad crashed during takeoff—following a refueling stop—while returning from a European Cup match in Belgrade. The disaster claimed the lives of 23 people, including eight players from the “Red Devils.”
