Libya, UN warns: pressure on the Central Bank; its independence must be preserved

TRIPOLI (LIBYA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has taken note of yesterday’s developments regarding the decision by the presidency of the Libyan House of Representatives concerning the leadership of the Central Bank of Libya. In an official statement, UNSMIL emphasized that the operational independence and integrity of the institution are essential for protecting public resources, maintaining economic stability, and upholding the trust of international partners.

UNSMIL stressed that any changes to the institution’s leadership must be grounded in improvements to governance and oversight. The Mission further warned that persistent pressure on the institution to finance rising public expenditure could intensify strain on the exchange rate, fuel inflation, and accelerate the depletion of reserves.

Finally, it urged all parties to strictly adhere to legal and institutional procedures in order to safeguard the credibility of the Central Bank of Libya.
