Manchester derby, one match suspension for VAR referees

ROME (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Matt Donohue and Blake Antrobus, the VAR officials during the Manchester derby won by City against United (1-0) on Sunday, did not have to wait long to learn their fate. Responsible for an “error of judgment” regarding the goal scored by Erling Haaland in the second half (60th minute), the referee and his VAR assistant will not officiate any matches in the upcoming round of the Premier League; this was announced by PGMOL, the body that manages referees in England. After initially disallowing the goal due to the Norwegian striker’s offside position, Donohue had decided to award it, given that Enzo Fernández’s positioning had caused confusion and interfered with play. The incident sparked a debate in England regarding such situations but did not prevent the officials from being held accountable for their actions.
